Write a short letter or email to the headteacher stating that you are withdrawing your child to home educate, effective immediately. The school must remove your child from the roll and notify the Local Authority. You do not need the school’s permission. Children on an EHCP at a special school have a different process. Speak to an IPSEA adviser first.
There is no nationally mandated format for an annual home-education report. LAs ask to be satisfied that education is "suitable" — a Flybrite report shows them exactly that, structured by subject area, with date-stamped evidence and photos drawn from your own logs. You sign it off before it leaves your hands. We have never had an LA reject the format. See a sample report at /sample-report.
The Children Not in School register is part of the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill currently progressing through Parliament. If it becomes law, families home educating children of compulsory school age will be required to register with their LA, providing a small set of details about the education they are providing. Flybrite is built so that whatever shape the register lands in, you will be able to export the relevant details directly. We track the legislation closely. See /legal-readiness for the latest position.
